what if everybody was just hanging out in VC during the day?
channels:
- open office (no expectation of quietness, no expectation of active discussion at any given time)
- break room (chilling in front of the laptop while eating lunch, open to hanging)
- personalized private rooms (for focusing or just not being online1)
- meeting rooms
benefits:
less intrusive than an actual open office plan
opt-in serendipity2
significant boost to inter-cultural growth rate
potential downsides:
none

IT EXISTS AND IT’S EVEN BETTER!
Footnotes

I do think it would be a nice touch to have everybody ‘parked’ in their office even when they’re totally offline. No meaningful difference, but when the first person signs on for the day, they would see a bunch of sleepers waiting to be activated rather than feeling like they’re opening up shop in a ghost town. ↩
-
likely result: reduction in number of formal meeting times scheduled. win-win for everybody; proportionally bigger win for the makers. ↩
